Population Pyramid

  • we use population pyramid to analyze growth (or decline) of fertility, mortality, and migration in cities
  • males are always on the left while females are on the right
  • There are three basic shapes
The Christmas tree (developing nation)
-growth rates are slow
-high birth rate
-short life expectancy
- Like? Namibia, Bangladesh

The box (developed nation; slow growth)
-low infant mortality
-slow population growth
-long life expectancy
- Like? Sweden, USA

The cup (developed nation, negative growth)
-low birth rate
-shrinking population
-long life expectancy
-Like? Italy, Japan

Today, in class we mainly talked about the three different shapes for the population pyramid. Which i find very interesting that someone has created this to describe a countries characteristic by its population shape. We also looked at a bunch of other cities pyramid shape as well as ones that were very oddly shaped. Overall, todays class was very interesting, and I learned a lot.

Reviewed our blogs

Today, in class we did not do that much note taking instead we just talked about our blogs and how the end of the quarter is coming so if you are missing anything or have any questions with any grades then now’s your time to fix it. Some people had questions about their blogs and how they were confused about how they got a lower grade than they expected. I'm pretty happy about where I'm at in class towards my grade. It would be cool if I had an A but that’s something that I need to work on next quarter which would be better grades for my test. But other than that, I feel pretty good about my grade currently in this class. Something else that we talked about was the grading scale when it comes to quarter 1 and 2 plus the semester exam. I think it's so cool that you can’t get lower than a 40 or 50 on the semester exam because it probably helps a lot of people in this school. Overall, todays class was great since we did not do anything.

Turks and Caicos Islands

So, today I will be doing Turks and Caicos Island because I went there when i was in the 6th grade as a family vacation, and it was the best place I have ever been to in my life. A couple things that I'm about to list I thought sounded interesting and is related to our unit. One thing is just the overall population which is 52,570 which to me and thought was low when i was there but I guess not. The second thing that I'm about to describe is the birth and death rate which we've been talking about a lot in class. The birth rate of Turks and Caicos Islands is 15.3 birth/1,000 population. The death rate is 3.2 deaths/1,000 population. The third to last thing that I thought was interesting and related to our unit is the total fertility rate which for this specific place is 1.7 children born/women. Since it's lower than 2.1 this mean that the population is decreasing. I know this is a lot of information, but I'm almost done. Something else that we've been talking a lot in class about is the net migration rate, which for Turks and Caicos Islands is 9.5 migrant(s)/1,000 population. For that subject this island is 10th in the world. Finally, the last thing that I'm going to discuss is where most of the people live since theres multiple islands that are part o Turks and Caicos. Only eight of the thirty islands are inhabited, Providenciales being the most populated. But, the most densely populated is Grand Turk. Overall, most of the stuff that I described in this blog is related to what we are talking about since it mostly has to do with population.

Migration notes

  • Net migration: the difference between the number of people entering and leaving a country during a year
  • an excess of persons entering the country is net immigration
  • written as a positive number
  • example: Canada has 5.65 migrant per 1,000 population
  • United States: 2.45 (it was in 3.62 in 2015)
  • an excess of people leaving the country is net emmigration
  • written as a negative number
  • Example: Mexico has -1.68 migrants per 1,000 population
  • -3.61 two years ago, -3.11 last year
Why do people migrate?

  • push forces
  • civil war
  • environmental degradation
  • unemployment or underemployment
  • religious or ethnic persecution

  • Pull forces
  • better economic opportunity
  • better health services
  • religious freedom
  • political freedom
We reviewed over our test, I feel pretty good about myself. I could off done a little better but I still feel good about my results. Overall, it was a good class once again and I cannot wait for tomorrows class.

Todays new unit notes!

Life Expectancy
-the average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year
-high: Monaco (89.52 total: 77.32 men, 81.97 women)
-#42 U.S. (79.68 total: 77.32 men, 81.97 women)
-low: Chad (49.81 total: 48.64 men, 51.03 women)

Measuring population

  • crude birth rate: number of births per 1,000 of the population
  • crude death rate: number of deaths per 1,000 of the population
Rate of natural increase (RNI)

  • produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate
  • this gives us the annual natural growth rate in percentage form for a country or region
Overall, todays class went smoothly, we learned a couple of new things like life expectancy, measuring population, and RNI. We also looked at the population website where it shows you how many people are in the world and we recorded what the number was in the beginning of class. Then, at the end of class we checked to see how much it increased.

New Unit

So, today in class we were introduced by a new unit since we just took our last units test a couple of days ago. We mainly talked about population in different countries and how so of them vary due to the government saying that you can only have a certain amount of children. Something else that we talked about was this website that we were introduced to and it showed the U.S population and the rate of new children being bored as well as the rate in which someone dies. It also said the overall population in the world as well as the different total number of people in different countries. To be honest I also thought that we were the most populated country but actually were top 3 which surprised me a lot and somehow China is number I which makes sense I guess.  Overall, todays class was pretty good and I'm excited about the new unit.

TEST!!

So today we took our test for maps. Overall i think i did pretty good at least a B or higher. There were some questions where i just did not know the answer. The ones where you had to figure the time out I just did not know how to because I was not too sure if you added or subtracted the number from the time and then I was not sure if it would be a.m. or p.m. There were other questions such as the one about why is some place in Texas named that, and I just had no idea to what the answer would be. But I think besides those the rest of it was just stuff from our notes that I studied. I think we had like 3 shadows today in our class which i feel sort of bad for since all we did was take and test and we all know that is not fun at all. Today was a good day since i got all of my test out of the way, so I feel good about myself.

Reviewed for the test

So today we just reviewed for the test since we don't have class tomorrow. We went over like time zones and how to figure out the time zone if it was like a specific time somewhere else. I'd say I'm pretty good at it I just don't know when it’s supposed to be a.m. or p.m. But, other than that I'm 90% good at it. Another thing that we went over were just like simple questions like what is at 0 degrees longitude which is the prime meridian. Also, we talked about what is located at 180 degrees which is Greenwich, England. But overall, we just discussed a couple test questions and determine if they should be a question on the test or not. We did have two shadows’ that visited our class today. They seemed pretty cool, I like how one of them just started talking about how he did not like his teachers at all, I thought that was pretty funny.

FInal day (sort of)

Today in class we took our last test of the year which was pretty exciting because well we have no more test besides the exam. Overall the t...
