Textbook questions (study for test)


  • direct democracy- a form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives
  • classical art- the values of harmony, order, balance, and proportion
  • tragedy- was a serious drama about common themes such as love, hate, war, or betrayal
  • comedy- contained scenes filled with slapstick situations and crude humor
  • Peloponnesian war- a war lasting from 431 to 404 BC in which Athens and its allies defeated by Sparta and its allies
  • philosopher-a thinker who uses logic and reason to investigate the nature of the universe, human society, and morality
  • Socrates- believed that absolute standards did exist for truth and justice; also told greeks to question themselves
  • plato- wrote his most famous work, The Republic in which he talked about the perfect governed society. Was a student of Socrates
  • Aristotle- questioned the nature of the world and of human belief, thought, and knowledge
